Can’t-miss guide to ONA15: Jen Mizgata

Note: This is third in a series of posts written by ONA staff and conference organizers recommending sessions they feel will be particularly interesting. Of course, we hope every session is valuable to the right audience, but with so many things happening at ONA15,  we want to offer useful highlights from a variety of viewpoints.

Previous recommendations came from Julie Westfall and Luis Gomez, co-chairs of the ONA15 Program Team. This list was created by Jen Mizgata, ONA’s Senior Communications Manager.

One of the very best things about working at ONA is getting to suggest ideas and speakers for the annual conference.  This is my fifth ONA conference (!) and ONA15  is hands-down the highlight of my work year. It’s so energizing to have meaningful conversations about what is working in journalism and how others can learn from the best projects and initiatives we’ve seen over the year.

My bread and butter at ONA is community engagement, so I’d be remiss not to mention that we have a whole track focused on audience and engagement and impact, which is full of really excellent sessions.

This year, I want to highlight a range of things that I’m super psyched about because they represent important conversations that the industry needs to be having today, but often haven’t been raised at our conference or other digital journalism conferences. Continue reading

Here’s a common sight at the Online News Association’s annual conference: A mass of attendees flooding the common spaces between sessions, flipping through their programs (or scrolling through it on the conference app), debating their next moves and being torn between this session or that session: “On the one hand … on the other hand.”

A big team worked hard to give you all those choices —  but sometimes the decisions can be hard to make in the moment, so a number of us are pointing out some of our personal top picks — the ones that most frequently catch our eyes when we peruse the schedule — and here are mine. We can’t wait to see you in Los Angeles.

Career Fair line-up announced, resumes sought

jsk-logoThis post is sponsored by the John S. Knight Fellowships at Stanford UniversityThe John S. Knight Fellowships at Stanford University fosters journalistic innovation, entrepreneurship and leadership. Each year, we give 20 outstanding individuals from around the world the resources to pursue their ideas for improving journalism. We work closely with them, to help them make the most of the amazing creativity and entrepreneurial spirit that are synonymous with Stanford University and Silicon Valley. http://jsk.stanford.edu

Watch a video about being a fellow.

We’re less than one month away from the opening of the ONA15 Career Fair.

Much like a concert for The Roots, we’ve all heard jobseekers and recruiters say about career fairs, “If you’ve been to one, you’ve been to them all.”

The ONA15 Career Fair will change that perception! In Los Angeles this September, you’ll find new, mid-career and veteran digital journalists and technologists seeking to be matched with emerging and leading media companies, organizations and education programs.

Though the recruiting event spans two days — Thursday, Sept. 24 from 1-5 p.m. and Friday, Sept. 25 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. — job and education seekers at ONA15 are strongly recommended to submit their information via the ONA Career Connections form, so recruiters can contact them before the conference to schedule conversations. Have a big idea? Pitch an ONA15 Lightning Talk

Every ONA conference is driven by ideas from the digital journalism community. In the spring, we take session pitches through the Suggestion Box, and throughout the spring and summer, the Program Team helps select and build out sessions. Now, just before the conference, we’re opening up two more ways to get involved: the Lightning Talks and the Unconference.

If you’ve got an idea for a full-blown conference session, you should pitch the unconference. If you’ve got a big idea to share and the guts to present it in five minutes or less, send us your lightning talk by Wednesday, Sept. 23. Continue reading

So you’ve made it this far, and that feeling may already be setting in. That feeling is the slight sense of panic or FOMO (fear-of-missing-out) as you come face-to-face with the ONA15 conference schedule. So many options! What to pick? Where to go?

Don’t worry! Those of us who helped shaped this year’s conference are excited to show you our top picks for all three days. Unlike the pride I get when I talk about my favorite bands or my favorite movies (Kubrick emphasis here), I feel it’s a sense of duty to emphasize the sessions that I believe will make you a better journalist at the end of the day.

Assuming you’re reading this and you haven’t quite planned out your sessions for all three days, here are five recommendations I consider to be “can’t-miss” sessions: Continue reading

Tell us what we missed! Pitch to the #ONAuncon

Hello!

Looking for a different kind of conference experience when you arrive at ONA15? Then look no further — that’s what the annual unconference is for.

TinyLetter_LogoWhat is the unconference, you ask? Every year, a team of volunteers gets attendees to submit their ideas for what they think should be a part of the official conference but isn’t. It could be a panel, it could be a hands-on workshop, it could be a roundtable discussion. We’re here to help you make those ideas into realities. Continue reading
