{"id":61625,"date":"2015-09-24T15:57:57","date_gmt":"2015-09-24T15:57:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ona15.journalists.org\/?p=61625"},"modified":"2016-12-16T06:34:27","modified_gmt":"2016-12-16T06:34:27","slug":"online-news-association-launches-free-build-your-own-ethics-code-at-2015-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ona15.journalists.org\/2015\/09\/24\/online-news-association-launches-free-build-your-own-ethics-code-at-2015-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"Online News Association launches free Build Your Own Ethics Code at 2015 conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/journalists.org\/wp-content\/themes\/ona-theme\/images\/logo.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"242\" height=\"104\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright\" style=\"clear: both\" src=\"http:\/\/sabew.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/eejf1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"232\" height=\"59\" \/>LOS ANGELES<\/strong> \u2014 <a href=\"http:\/\/journalists.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Online News Association<\/a> today launched a fully crowd-sourced tool that allows journalists to easily customize and publish a digital ethics code.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ethics.journalists.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Build Your Own Ethics Code platform,<\/a> supported by a $40K grant from the <a href=\"http:\/\/inasmuchfoundation.org\/journalism-foundation\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation,<\/a> addresses the intense interest and concern in the digital journalism community around the growing ethical issues unique to social media, technology and the viral nature and speed of breaking news.<\/p>\n<p>Using the tool, journalists can review and easily select statements from a menu addressing more than 40 ethical issues, including user-generated content, verification, data journalism, social networks, suicide, graphic visuals, hostage situations, privacy, gender and ethnicity and hate speech. They then can tailor a code and export it for publication and internal use.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The user-friendly tool, the product of two years of discussion and global crowdsourcing, is still in beta, and we invite all users to contribute feedback on both editorial and technical aspects. The project was guided by ONA\u2019s News Ethics Committee and an <a href=\"http:\/\/ethics.journalists.org\/team\/\" target=\"_blank\">editorial team<\/a> led by Tom Kent, AP\u2019s Standards Editor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur strong belief is that whether or not a journalist or news organization chooses to build a code, using the tool will spark crucial, necessary discussions of the most important ethical issues confronting digital journalists,\u201d said ONA Executive Director Jane McDonnell.<\/p>\n<p>This is the first feature in a digital toolkit supported by the EEJF grant, designed to lighten journalists\u2019 workloads, engender thoughtful conversations on vital issues and help them generate revenue. The second \u2014 a simple WordPress plug-in of a live schedule modeled after one that powers <a href=\"http:\/\/ona15.journalists.org\/sessions\/\" target=\"_blank\">ONA\u2019s complex conference schedule<\/a> \u2014 will debut later in the fall.<\/p>\n<p>ONA\u2019s digital team \u2014 Digital Director <strong>Trevor Knoblich<\/strong>, Digital Manager and lead developer <strong>Jeremiah Patterson,<\/strong> and developer consultant <strong>Adam Nekola<\/strong> \u2014 designed the site. More than 20 journalists and news ethics experts contributed to the project. The editors are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tom Kent, Standards Editor, Associated Press<\/li>\n<li>Alan Abbey, Director of Media and Adjunct Professor of Journalism, Shalom Hartman Institute at the National University, Israel<\/li>\n<li>Steve Buttry, Director of Student Media, Louisiana State University<\/li>\n<li>Kathleen Culver, Assistant Professor and Associate Director of the Center for Journalism Ethics, University of Wisconsin-Madison<\/li>\n<li>Wendy Wyatt, Chair of the Communication and Journalism School, University of St. Thomas<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The ethics tool was launched on the opening day of the 2015 Online News Association Conference, which will end Saturday, Sept. 26.<\/p>\n<p><strong>About ONA<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/journalists.org\/\">The Online News Association<\/a> is the world\u2019s largest association of online journalists.
